People with Stagefright…..

Who are the main people with Stagefright?

Freddy Koikaran, Creative Director

Freddy Koikaran, Creative Director

Conceived sometime in the late 90’s, but created only in 2004, Stagefright Productions is the brainchild of Freddy Koikaran, a theatre and music artist who has been active on stage since 1991.

Freddy’s professional background in advertising, voiceovers, retail, radio and training dates back to 1994, when he first migrated to Chennai, but his theatre and music backgrounds extend to 1991, when he first began performing on stage.

He started out in music, in college, and eventually began singing professional jingles for English ad spots and locally produced English albums. In more recent times, he has sung professionally in Tamil and Telugu for the Disney channel, and he has also performed playback numbers for music directors Vidyasagar and Ramesh Vinayagam. Freddy regularly performs on stage and enjoys singing classic rock songs.

As far as his theatre career goes, he began with The Living Theatre, a group based in Cochin, and after joining the Madras Christian College, performed in two plays there and proceeded to work with every group that he could in Chennai. Finally, in 1996, he directed his first short play, and then in 2002, he co-directed the Little Theatre’s annual Christmas pantomime, “Robin Hood: Wanted For Good!” Two years later, “Grease” hit the stage to much acclaim, and there has been no turning back, with Freddy having directed about 15 different shows since then, many of them with casts as large as 35 people or more.. Some of these shows are:

  • Beethoven: The Sound of Silence (2004)
  • Fourplay (2005)
  • Five of Hearts (2006)
  • Murder at the Diner (2006)
  • Love Bites (2006)
  • Death and the Maiden (2007)
  • A Night at the Musical (2009)
  • Chicago (2009)

Freddy has also acted in two English movies, both locally produced. One was with Michael Muthu of the Boardwalkers, while the other was for Vijay Prabhakaran of Darktree Productions. However, theatre remains his constant love!

Neesha John-Koikaran, Production Head

Neesha John-Koikaran, Production Head

Neesha John-Koikaran works as the production manager for most Stagefright shows. Having completed her qualification to teach dyslexic children and having a Montessori background as well, Neesha worked with a number of schools in the city, including the American International School and Abacus Montessori before moving onto other interests. She has worked in retail and training, but the backstage aspects of theatre are what get her excited.

She has sung with the Madras Musical Association and has also performed in with the Little Theatre’s annual Christmas pantomime.

Having handled backstage entirely, as well as production responsibilities, Neesha has a very holistic view with regard to staging shows and is adept at ensuring that all angles are covered. She now functions as Production Head for Stagefright.
